The Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary

MARIAN DEVOTION

The Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows contemplates seven principal sorrows in the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary, united to the Passion of her Son.

The seven sorrows

  1. The Prophecy of Simeon.
  2. The Flight into Egypt.
  3. The Loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple.
  4. Mary meets Jesus carrying His Cross.
  5. Mary stands beneath the Cross at the Crucifixion.
  6. Mary receives the dead Body of Jesus in her arms.
  7. Jesus is laid in the tomb.

A traditional form of the devotion

After meditating on each sorrow, the faithful commonly pray one Our Father and seven Hail Marys. The devotion may be concluded with prayers asking Our Lady to obtain sorrow for sin, perseverance and a holy death.

Prayer to Our Lady of Sorrows

O most afflicted Virgin, Mother of Sorrows, by the anguish thou didst suffer at the foot of the Cross, obtain for me a tender compassion for the sufferings of Jesus, true sorrow for my sins, and the grace to remain faithful to Him unto death. Amen.

The short concluding prayer above is an original devotional composition for this guide, not a historical quotation. For the full traditional texts and indulgence conditions, consult an approved prayer book or official Church source.
